It’s official….Scotland has been awarded ‘two’ of the ‘coolest postcodes’ in the UK.
The Times Newspaper recently published ‘10 coolest postcodes to move to in 2024’ and we can’t wait to tell you all about it.
The stunning and beautiful ‘Tongue’ in the Scottish Highlands has been named as one of the top ‘micro-neighbourhoods’. A scenic coastal village on the west side of Sutherland (with some good hills to climb ‘Ben Hope’ and ‘Ben Loyal’) and some beautiful stone buildings.
It was originally an island community until Telford completed the road to Lairg in 1828. The passenger ferry across the Kyle of Tongue ceased operation back in 1953 after car ownership became commonplace. In 1971 a bridge and a larger road replaced the original narrow road.
It has some interesting history relating back to the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie, when the ship ‘Hazard’ was heading to Inverness, escaping into the Kyle of Tongue to avoid ‘HMS Sheerness’ it was carrying large numbers of gold coins for Bonnie Prince Charlie’s ‘Rebellion’ the crew on ‘Hazard’ attempted to take the gold on to the shore with a view to carrying it to the destination. Government and their forces caught up with the crew at Lochan Haken and the gold was thrown into the loch by the crew, rather than have them steal it. The gold was later recovered by the government.
We conducted a search on RightMove and the average property price in Tongue is £232,324.
Take a look at this 3 bedroom detached bungalow currently for sale on RightMove for offers over £190,000
Wow – what a view! This property first came on to the market on 9th November 2023, we think they might be motivated 3 months later to get this property shifted….that view is priceless!
We love everything about the name ‘Portobello’ it just sounds fun straightaway! Well known for the stunning sweeping beach views, it is also a coastal town within Scotland’s Capital City (3 miles to the east of the Centre).
Back in the 18th century, it was awash with ‘smugglers’ but by the 19th century it was industrialised with brick manufacturing, glass, paper, pottery and soap. It was in 1833 that the town was made a ‘burgh’.
During 1846 and 1964 a railway station allowed access from visitors to the resort and a large open air swimming pool was built, heated by waste from the power station! The actor, Sean Connery, once worked there as a lifeguard. The pool shut down in 1979.
In 2019 it was also voted the best neighbourhood in the UK at the 2020 Urbanism Awards and was considered at that time to be one of the top eight places to live in Scotland. We can see it has not lost its appeal.
Locally it is known as ‘trendy’ with a large selection of quaint shops and businesses.
Prices are premium in Portobello for a reason. We had a look on RightMove and the cheapest property listed right now in Portobello was this one.
A top floor flat with one bedroom, on for offers over £170,000. This property came on to the market on 2nd February.
The most expensive we could see listed is listed for offers over £775,000 which hit the market on 28th September 2023 and has 3 bedrooms. A beautiful late Georgian house that is a stone’s throw from the promenade.
